18TH JUNE Henry was elevated to the Dukedom of Richmond and Somerset and Earl of Nottingham 5th creation. On the morning of the 18th, the six-year-old Lord Henry FitzRoy traveled by barge from Thomas Wolsey’s mansion of Durham Place, near Charing Cross, down the River Thames. He came in the company of a host of knights, squires, and other gentlemen. At 9 am his barge pulled up at the Watergate and his party made their way through the palace to the king's lodgings on the south side of the second floor.

Henry was the Illegitimate son of King Henry VIII of England and half brother to future monarchs, Edward VI, Mary 1st and Elizabeth 1th of England.Through his mother he was the elder half-brother of the 4th Baroness Tailboys of Kyme and of the 2nd and 3rd Baron Tailboys of Kyme.

Henry VIII considered marrying the Henry Fitzroy off to his sons half-sister Mary in order to legitimize his claim to the throne. Henry was desperate at this time because it was evident that Catherine was no longer fertile and he had no male heir.

Mary Howard, Henry's wife was the daughter of Thomas Howard the 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Mary was first cousins to two Tudor Queen consorts Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard.was on excellent terms with his brother-in-law, the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey.

Henry Fitzroy's death was a huge blow to King Henry VIII. By the May of 1536, King Henry had made both his daughter Mary and Elizabeth illegitimate. Now his Henry' Fitzroy's death this left the king no lifelines.

After Henry's Fitzroy's death, his father-in-law, the Duke of Norfolk issued orders that the body be wrapped in lead and taken in a closed cart for secret interment, in the Cluniac priory of Thetford. The only mourners were two attendants who followed at a distance. His young widow Mary Howard was refused a pension by the King, as the couple were so young it is doubtful that the marriage had ever been consummated.
