  • 9TH SEPTEMBER Battle Of Flodden. This was between England and Scotland. Catherine of Aragon is commander for the English, James IV, Scotland, is commander for the Scots. Result Decisive English Victory James IV is killed and James is King of Scotland.
  • 21ST SEPTEMBER: The coronation of James as king of Scotland fifth of his name. crowned in the chapel royal at Stirling castle by James Beaton, Archbishop of Glasgow.

  • JUNE – Battle of Hornshole in the Scottish Borders: Young men from Hawick defeat a raiding party from England.
  • 6TH AUGUST: James mother Margaret Tudor, married Archibald Douglas, 6th earl of Angus

  • 11TH MARCH: James mother Margaret Tudor is divorced from Archibald Douglas, 6th earl of Angus.
  • END OF MARCH: Margaret Tudor & her lover, Henry Stewart, were besieged at Stirling castle. a few weeks later,
  • JUNE: James escaped from Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus custody, and took refuge with Margaret and Arran at Stirling, after which the Douglas’s lost their lands.

  • 3RD JUNE: James wrote from Stirling castle to Francis I regarding his possible marriage to Madeleine, the treaty, and the alternative offer of Mary of Bourbon.

  • 6TH MARCH: The contract was made for James V to marry Mary of Bourbon, daughter of the Duke of Vendome. she would have a dowry as if she were a French princess.
  • 29TH MARCH: A final contract made at Cremieu, near Lyon, for Mary to marry James, sealed by Francis I of France
  • 1ST SEPTEMBER: James sailed from Kirkcaldy travels to France to meet, Mary of Bourbon, at St. Quentin in Picardy

  • 10TH JUNE: Mary of Guises landed in Scotland. at Crail in Fife.
  • 12TH JUNE: James married Mary of Guise
  • James illegitimate son James was appointed Prior of St Andrews, Fife,

  • 22ND FEBRUARY: James wife, Mary of Guise's coronation. Mary was crowned Queen consort of Scotland at Holyrood Abbey  by David Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews
  • 22ND MAY: James son James Stewart, Duke of Rothesay born

  • 21ST APRIL: James son of James Stewart, Duke of Rothesay died
  • 12 -20TH APRIL: James son Arthur born and died a few days later.
  • 18TH OCTOBER: James mother Margaret Tudor died, at Methven Castle, Perthshire, the kingdom of Scotland

  • 12TH JULY Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor declares war on King Francis I of France. This time King Henry VIII of England is allied to the Emperor, while James V of Scotland and Sultan Suleiman I are allied to the French.

  • 14TH DECEMBER: James V of Scotland is dead, he died at Falkland Palace, Fife, Scotland.

EXTRA FACTS ABOUT JAMES V OF SCOTLAND

  • James Stuart was King of Scotland for twenty-nine years.

 

  • James was the Grandson of Henry VII of England, through his mother Margaret Tudor. He was the nephew to Henry VIII England and also a Cousin to Future Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I England.

 

  • James would be the Father of the future Mary Queen of Scots. As well as the grandfather to James VI of Scotland.

 

  • The Treaty of Rouen was a treaty that provided the renewal of the Auld Alliance in terms of mutual military assistance and reciprocal aid.

 

  • James was also a keen lute player.

 

  • James went to France, to meet Mary of Bourbon. However when he met, Madeleine of Valois, he was smitten by her and she showed him considerable interest too. King Francis 1st France originally did not support their union as he worried about his daughter Madeline’s ill health in the cold climate of Scotland.

 

 

 

  • Before King James died, he is reported to have said "" meaning "It began with a girl and it will end with a girl" His House of Stewart had gained the throne of Scotland by the marriage of Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, to Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. The crown had come to his family through a woman and would be lost from his family through a woman.
