WHEN DID AMERICAN BECOME INDEPENDENT

President Trump's comments to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

In the recent news President Trump's comments to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: According to the sources, Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a "national security" issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, "Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" referring to the War of 1812. British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York. Canada was born in 1867, fifty-five years later.

COLONISTS OF THE NEW WORLD

AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

In April 1775 British soldiers, that were called lobsterbacks because of their red coats, and minutemen—the colonists' militia, exchanged gunfire at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Described as "the shot heard round the world," it signalled the start of the American Revolution and led to the creation of a new nation. This war lasted from April 19th, 1775 – September 3rd, 1783.

America had been under British rule for nearly 170 years. In general, the British colonies in North America were known as British America and the British West Indies until 1776, after which the Thirteen Colonies declared their independence and formed the United States of America. The American colonies chose to declare independence from Great Britain for many reasons. They believed the British were treating the colonists unfairly. The British passed many tax laws that impacted the colonists. The colonists had no representatives in Parliament to vote on or discuss these laws.

The British were defeated, however, did not leave America. Britain recognized the independence of the United States following their defeat at Yorktown in 1781. The Treaty of Paris, signed in Paris by representatives of King George III of Great Britainand representatives of the United States of America on September 3rd, 1783, ended the American Revolutionary War.
