  • 23RD JULY the seventeen-year-old Edward de Vere, accidentally killed an unarmed under-cook, Thomas Brincknell, while practising fencing with Edward Baynham, a merchant tailor, in the backyard of William's House in the Strand. The finding of the coroner's inquest was that Brincknell, being intoxicated, had run upon the point of Oxford's sword and was thereby condemned as a suicide

  • William Cecil, was 1st Baron Burghley and also was Queen Elizabeth 1st' chief and trusted advisor as well as twice secretary of state.
 
  • Both his father, and his grandfather were courtiers under Tudor monarchs. David Cecil who was born on the Welsh Border, was a yeoman of the guard under King Henry VII of England . Richard Cecil, William's father was a former Groom of the Robes, Constable of Warwick Castle and Politician.
     
  • William Cecil had three sisters – Anne, Margaret and Elizabeth. He was the only son and was put through first at a school at Grantham and then at Stamford. Then later St John's College, Cambridge, where he was brought into contact with the foremost educationists of the time, Roger Ascham and John Cheke, and acquired an unusual knowledge of Greek. It was at this point he met his first wife , the sister of John Cheke.William had embarked on a career as a judge before moving into politics.
 
  • During William's youth, he was close friends with Gregory Cromwell, the son of Thomas Cromwell King Henry VIII Chief minister .
 
  • Nicholas White who later was an Irish lawyer, (judge) and government official, was a tutor chosen by William for his children while in his student days in London. William and Nicholas would stay in correspondence with each other over the Years to come. Nicholas most remarked-upon service for William is his report on his visit with Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1569, during the early years of her imprisonment by Queen Elizabeth
 
  • Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St Albans, who was a was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author was a nephew of William Cecil. Mildred Cooke and Francis Bacon mother were sisters.
 
  • William, was lucky to escape not only the fall of Edward Seymour, Lord Protector but also escaped The Lady Jane Grey saga of 1553 In June 1553. William was commanded by Edward VI to sign his “Device for the Succession” naming Lady Jane Grey as heir, although he tried to resist signing it. Even though he was Protestant, he did conform to Catholicism when Mary Tudor sat the English throne between 1553-1558.
     
  • William was Protestant, When Elizabeth became Queen of England , William stated that he did not believe in religious tolerance and said that England “could never be in safety where there was a toleration of two religions”
     
  • In his private life he appears to have been a faithful husband, a careful father and a dutiful master
 
 
  • When Mary Queen Scots was implicated in a plot to Kill Queen Elizabeth, William was one of those who persuaded the Queen to Executed the Scottish Queen.
 
  • When William Cecil died his son Robert Cecil took over his role in politics. First with Queen Elizabeth 1st and then with King James of England. It was Robert in November 1605 that was involved in finding out and bringing to justice those involved in the Gun Powder Plot.
  • One of William Cecil's famous descendants was Robert Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury (1830–1903), served three times as Prime Minister under Queen Victoria and Edward VII.
