  • 12TH APRIL Edward De Vere was born at Hedingham Castle, Essex, England the son of John de Vere, 16th Earl of Oxford and Margery Golding `
  • Edward was first brought up in the household of Thomas Smith and his early education was supervised by him.

  • 6TH JULY King Edward VI is dead
  • 10TH JULY The Lady Jane Grey as Queen of England for nine days
  • 19TH JULY Mary Tudor is declared Queen of all England and The Lady Jane Grey is now deposed and imprisoned in the Tower of London and later executed on the 12th February 1554.

  • Edward entered Queens' College, Cambridge
  • 17TH NOVEMBER Queen Mary Tudor is dead and now her half-sister Elizabeth is Queen of England

  • 16TH DECEMBER Edward married Anne Cecil which took place at the Palace of Whitehall.Q ueen Elizabeth 1st of England attended the wedding.

  • MAY Edward is now in freedom out of William Cecil's control was finally granted the income of £666 which his father had intended him to have earlier
  • 2ND JUNE The execution of Edward's cousin Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk

  • JANUARY Edward sold his manors in Cornwall, Staffordshire and Wiltshire to three trustees for £6,000.
  • FEBRUARY Edward left England for France
  • MARCH Edward was presented to the King and Queen of France
  • While Edward was still abroad, News that Anne, his wife was pregnant had reached him in Paris and he sent her many extravagant presents in the coming months. But somewhere along the way, his mind was poisoned against Anne and the Cecil's, and he became convinced that the expected child was not his. The Cecil family were extremely angry at this allegation which made the situation worse.

  • Around this time, the Italian financier Benedict Spinola had lent De Vere over £4,000 for his 15-month-long continental tour, while in England over 100 tradesmen were seeking settlement of debts totalling thousands of pounds
  • MARCH Edward left Venice
  • While travelling home to England, Edward's ship was hijacked by pirates from Flushing who took his possessions, stripped him to his shirt, and might have murdered him had not one of them recognized him
  • APRIL Edward, returned home to England, but not to his wife Anne. He took rooms at Charing Cross

  • MARCH Mary de Vere , Edward's sister married Peregrine Bertie, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby
  • Edward invested £25 in the second of Martin Frobisher's expeditions in search of the Northwest Passage
  • JULY Edward asked the Crown for the grant of Castle Rising, which had been forfeited to the Crown due to his cousin Thomas Howard 4th Norfolk's attainder in 1572.[As soon as it was granted to him, he sold it, along with two other manors, and sank some £3,000 into Frobisher's third expedition . Edward ended up losing his entire investment.

  • Edward attended Queen Elizabeth's progress through East Anglia.The royal party stayed at Lord Henry Howard's residence at Audley End.

  • Edward insulted Sir Philip Sidney by calling him a "puppy" on the tennis-court at Whitehall. Sidney accordingly challenged Oxford, but the queen forbade him to fight, and required him to apologize on the ground of the difference of rank between the disputants. On Sidney's refusal and consequent disgrace Oxford is said to have schemed to murder him

  • Edward did toy in his mind with the Catholicism faith. However later did denounced a group of Catholic friends to the Queen Elizabeth, accusing them of treasonous activities and asking her mercy for his own, now repudiated, Catholicism. He was kept under house arrest for a short time
  • 15TH JUNE Benedict Spinola sold a tenement and 7 acres (28,000 m2) in the parish of St Botolph's Aldgate, London, to Edward , for £2,500.

  • 23RD MARCH Anne Vavasour , Edward's mistress gives birth to Edward's illegitimate son Edward Vere
    This resulted in their imprisonment in the Tower of London by the command of Queen Elizabeth .
  • 8TH JUNE Edward was released from the prison after few months, but banished from court.
  • John Lyly became Edward's private secretary
  •  Edward took part in an Accession Day tournament at Whitehall

  • JANUARY Edward reconciled with his wife Anne Cecil.
  • MARCH There was a duel n the streets of London between Edward and Anne's uncle, Sir Thomas Knyvet. Edward was wounded and his servant killed
  • Edward bought the sublease of the first Blackfriars Theatre and gave it to the poet-playwright Lyly, who operated it for a season under Edward as Earl Oxford's patronage

  • CHRISTMAS Edward sponsored a Christmas court performance of tumbler John Symons and his group of acrobats during his tenure with Lord Strange's Men and Queen Elizabeth's Men

  • 19TH JANUARY Anne Vavasour's (Edward old mistress) brother Thomas sent Edward a written challenge; which he ignored
  • MARCH Edward was to be sent to Scotland as one of the hostages for King James's VI safety. This was when negotiations were underway for King James's to come to England to discuss the release of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots

  • 27TH DECEMBER Edward married Elizabeth Trentham the sister of Francis Trentham. Elizabeth Trentham brought her husband a dowry of £1000 bequeathed to her in her father's will, payable at the rate of 500 marks a year for three years

  • MARCH After the execution of Charles Danvers, Edward became involved in a complicated suit regarding lands which had reverted to the Crown by escheat at Danvers' attainder, a suit opposed by Danvers' kinsmen

EXTRA FACTS ON EDWARD DE VERE, 17TH EARL OF OXFORD

  • Edward de Vere, was the 17th Earl of Oxford English poet, playwright and courtier
 
  • Edward is believed to be named after Edward VI, from whom he received a gilded christening cup. Edward was born into one of the second oldest Earldom families in England. Before his earldom Edward was styled Viscount Bulbeck and was raised in the Protestant reformed faith
 
  • Anne Cecil, Edward's first wife was the daughter of William Cecil, Queen Elizabeth's chief advisor . Edward had been William's ward since after his own father's John De Vere death. Edward and Anne marriage brought three daughters, yet was an unhappy one. During their bitter five year separation, Edward insisted that when his estranged wife Anne was at court and attending on the Queen, that she will not speak to him or approach him. He even went on to insist that his wife Anne should not be at court when he was present.

  • The Prince Tudor theory (also known as Tudor Rose theory) is a variant of the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship, which asserts that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, was the true author of the works published under the name of William Shakespeare. The Prince Tudor variant holds that Oxford and Queen Elizabeth I were lovers and had a child who was raised as Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton. The theory followed earlier arguments that Francis Bacon was a son of the queen
 
  • In 1987, a group called The De Vere Society was  a group set up to put forward the evidence that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford was the real author of the works of William Shakespeare.
