Anne of Cleves was Queen of England for six months.

Anne came from the House of La Marck. A house which goes back to 1200 AD.

Anne’s grandfather John II, Duke of Cleves, was nicknamed The Babymaker" since he fathered sixty-three illegitimate children, before his marriage with Mathilde of Hesse.

Anne was the fourth wife of King Henry VIII of England. The marriage was never consummated and thus was annulled. Anne was the shortest reigning Queen, however, came of more successful than any other one of Henry the VIII wives.

Anne did not possess an educational or have any musical accomplishments and was ill-equipped to function in the contentious English court. She was not the first choice for the king. Marie de Guise was the first choice; however, she then went on and married King James V of Scotland, King Henry VIII nephew. The second choice was Christina of Denmark, the sixteen-year-old widowed Duchess of Milan. Christina was disturbed by Henry's treatment of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn and apparently told Thomas Wriothesley, "If I had two heads, one should be at the King of England's disposal."

When King Henry first met Anne. He and some of his courtiers following a courtly-love tradition went disguised into the room where Anne was staying. Eustace Chapuys reported that Henry went up into the chamber where the Lady Anne was looking out of a window to see the bull-baiting which was going on in the courtyard. Henry suddenly then embraced and kissed her and showed her a token which the king had sent her for New Year’s gift. She is being abashed and not knowing whom it had thanked him, and so he spoke with her. But she regarded him little, and kept looked out of the window…. and when the king saw that she took so little notice of his coming he went into another chamber and took off his cloak and came in again, in a coat of purple velvet. When the lords and knights saw his grace, they did him reverence. According to the testimony of his companions, King Henry was disappointed with Anne, feeling she was not as described. According to the chronicler Charles Wriothesley. Anne "regarded him little", though it is unknown if she knew if this was the king or not. Henry did then reveal his true identity to Anne, although he is said to have been put off the marriage from then on.

Eleanor Manners, nee (Paston) (Countess of Rutland) who was a lady in waiting at court, had a conversation with Anne during her time as queen consort. Anne had praised the King as a kind husband, saying: "When he comes to bed he kisseth me, and he taketh me by the hand, and biddeth me 'Good night, sweetheart'; and in the morning kisseth me and biddeth 'Farewell, darling.'" Countess of Rutland responded: "Madam, there must be more than this, or it will be long ere we have a duke of York, which all this realm most desire.

Catherine Howard, Henry VIII fifth wife, had been, the lady in waiting to Anne during her time as the English queen. Anne was aware of Henry’s interest in Catherine and had come to terms with the situation. After Anne’s annulment and Catherine Howard became Queen, Anne danced at court with Catherine to show she held no bitterness.

After Anne and King Henry VIII annulment, Anne received a generous settlement. This included Richmond Palace, Wings Place and Hever Castle, the home of Henry's former in-laws, the Boleyn’s. Anne grew to enjoy English ale and gambling. She spent large sums on gowns and she visited with the king’s children and occasionally visited the king himself.

Anne owned Hever Castle until her death in 1557 but it is not known how much time she spent at the Castle. However, there is a surviving letter written by Anne to the Queen of England, Mary Tudor in 1554 signed ‘from my poor house of Hever’.

When Anne's health began to fail, Mary the 1st of England permitted her to live at Chelsea Old Manor. This had been the residence of Catherine Parr, Henry the VIII last wife.

There is an Anne of Cleves House on Southover High Street in Lewes, East Sussex, England. Which is a 15th-century timber-framed Wealden hall house
