EXTRA FACTS GEORGE VILLIERS, 1ST DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM

  • George Villiers, was the 1st Duke of Buckingham and the known favourite of King James VI Scotland as well as a patron of the arts. There was much speculation over the nature of King James relationship and George and insinuations of homosexuality.
 
  • George was the king's constant companion and closest advisor. Even after James I's death, Buckingham remained at the height of royal and in favour under Charles I, until he was assassinated
 
  • Mary, George's mother seen potential in her son. Mary sent George to the French court here he learned the courtly skills, including fencing and dancing, and then sent him to the English Court, where he rapidly became the new favourite of King James . As George's rose so did his family along with him.
 
  • Katherine Manners was selected by the Countess of Buckingham to marry her son, George Villiers. However, Katherine Manners was a strict Roman Catholic, and the King refused to allow Villiers to marry her. In addition to this, the Earl of Rutland refused to accept the Countess of Buckingham’s demands for his daughter’s dowry. Katherine Manners converted to Protestantism, to satisfy the Villiers family. After Katherine Manner spending the night at Countess home at due to an attack of illness. Manners father believed his daughters honour to be compromised, the Earl of Rutland refused to receive her back, and demanded that George Villiers marry her immediately
 
  • George was a character in A Game at Cheswhich, which was a comic satirical play by Thomas Middleton. George is represented by the by the King's Men at the Globe Theatre.
 
  • George was stabbed in the chest with a dagger. at the Greyhound Pub in Portsmouth by a Puritan assassin named John Felton , According to an eye-witness account, he lived just long enough to jump up, shouting "Villain!" and making to chase after his assailant, but then fell down dead. John Felton was tried and found guilty and was hanged at Tyburn on the 29th November 1628.
     
  • Barbara Villiers (Palmer) the known mistress of King Charles II of England and mother to at least five of his illegitimate children, was half great niece to George through his nephew William Villiers, 2nd Viscount Grandison .
