EXTRA FACTS ON EDMUND BEAUFORT

  • Edmund Beaufort was the 2nd Duke of Somerset. He was from the House of Beaufort which was founded in 1373, by Edmund’s father John Beaufort.

  • Edmund was great grandson of Edward III England and a son to John Beaufort 1st Earl of Somerset. He was also uncle to Margaret Beaufort who would be mother to the future Henry VII of England.

  • Edmund was cousin of Henry V of England; Edmunds father John was half- brother to Henry IV of England. They shared the same father John of Gaunt.

  • Edmund was alleged to have had an affair with Queen dowager Catherine of Valois, around 1427. However, there is no evidence to support this. It was also widely suspected that Edmund had an extra-marital affair with Margaret of Anjou, the Queen consort of Henry VI of England. Many even speculated that Margaret’s son Edward of Westminster could have been Edmunds, as at the time of conception Henry VI did not seem in the mental capacity to perform the act of conceiving. Edmund was noted to be quite close to Queen Margaret.

  • Although Edmund was the head of one of the greatest families in England, his inheritance was worth only 300 pounds. The Duke of York, Richard Plantagenet his rival had a much larger amount money. When the Henry VI tried to compensate Edmund for this, by giving him offices worth £3000, the other nobles including Duke of York became offended. Edmund also had quarrels with Richard Neville 16th earl of Warwick, over the lordships of Glamorgan and Morgannwg which may have forced the leader of the younger Neville’s into York's camp, and supporting them in the Wars of the Roses.
