  • King James,  went to visit the North of his kingdom and he made the nobles swear fealty to Joan in the event something happened to him. He done this again in 1435.

  • Alexander Macdonald, Lord of the Isles, was captured after a rampage of burning and pillaging in the Highlands. He was forced to appear before the high altar in Holyrood Abbey, dressed as a penitent. In a pre-staged scene, Joan and others pleaded for Macdonald’s life. This allowed King James to save face while exercising mercy.

  • 3RD AUGUST: Joan is imprisoned in Stirling castle by sir Alexander Livingston of callendar, Joan is forced to relinquish custody of her son King James II Scotland
  • 4TH SEPTEMBER Joan and her new husband James Stewart are released from prison after a” New agreement” in drawn up called “the appointment” was negotiated. Alexander Livingston was given custody of James II but Joan was allowed access to her son. Joan was relegated to the role of taking care of her children. she had three more sons with Stewart.

  • Joan Beaufort was Queen consort of James 1st of Scotland for seven years
 
  • Joan, came from the House of Beaufort, John Beaufort was the founder of this House and the son of John of Gaunt,
 
 
  • Joan was a cousin of Henry the V of England, and first cousin once removed to Henry VI of England. Joan mother was Margaret Holland, a half-niece of King Henry IV of England. Through her mother she was a related to King Edward I of England and through her father related to King Edward III.
 
  • Joan met James the 1st when he was a captive of the English King. The couple had known each other from at least the year 1420. James fell in love with Joan and she is said to have been the inspiration for his famous long poem, “The King is Quair”, written after he saw her from his window in the garden. After the wedding there was festivities held and run by Cardinal Henry Beaufort, Joan’s uncle.
 
  • Joan's dowry of 10,000 merks was subtracted from the substantial ransom of 60,000merks the Scots had to pay for the return of their king.
 
 
  • Joan’s daughter, Joan Stewart was born deaf and dumb. Joan was taught sign language. In this era, it was deemed impolite to use sign language in public, however Joan Stewart, dismissed this and used sign language publicly.

  • On the 20th of February 1437, Joan and her husband King James were in private rooms at Blackfriars lodgings. They were separated from the servants the king's chamberlain, allowed his co-conspirators—thought to number about thirty—led by Robert Graham and the Chambers brothers access to the building. James was alerted to the men's presence giving the king time to hide in a sewer tunnel but with its exit recently blocked off to prevent tennis balls getting lost, James was trapped and murdered. Joan however managed to escape, quickly sending word to Edinburgh to keep her son James safe. Joan removed her son’s current governor and replacing him with someone she trusted
 
  • Catherine Douglas, was a lady-in-waiting to Joan Beaufort when Queen tried to prevent the assassination of King James. Catherine sprang to the door and placed her arm through the staples to bar the assassins' entrance. However, they forced the door open anyway, breaking Catherine's arm.The idiomatic phrase "Katy, bar the door!" (a warning of the approach of trouble) may have its origins in the story of Catherine Douglas.
