What are Witch hunters? Who were they and what did they do?

A witch hunt definition is a person who seeks out people who are accused of being witches. Many wrote books supporting their ideas and to convince the public of their methods in determining who was guilty of practising the occult.

NOTES

 

  • John was a physician in England and author of books and other texts on medicine and witchcraft

  • He was a scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge, and corpus Christi college.

  • John  wrote extensively about quack doctors and exposed several in his book ignorant practiser of physique, which he wrote in 1612

  • His medical colleague was James Hart from Northampton,

  • John believed in evil spirits, sorcerers and magic. he begins his book during the trial of witchcraft (1616)

  • the name "John Cotta" was given as a nickname

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Matthew claimed to hold the office of witchfinder general,
  • He born in Great Wenham, Suffolk, his father was James Hopkins a clergyman. He had three elder brothers, James, John, and Thomas

  • witch-finding career began in March 1644 and lasted until his retirement in 1647

  • Matthew and his associates were responsible for more people being hanged for witchcraft than in than in any other century

  • He acquired an evil reputation which in later days made his name synonymous with finger man or informer paid by authorities to commit perjury".

  • Matthew book the discovery of witches, which was published in 1647, and outlined his methods in witch hunting

  • died at his home in a  Manning tree, Essex, on 12th August 1647

  •   Peter was a German bishop and theologian.

  •  He was elected Auxiliary Bishop of Trier and became a well-known writer on theology, who achieved notoriety as one of the most prominent witch-hunters of his time.

  • Peter wrote the influential treatise De confessionibus maleficorum et sagarum ('Of the Confessions of Warlocks and Witches') translated into several languages (Trier, 1589). This work discussed the confessions of alleged witches & claimed that even if such confessions were produced by torture, they should still be believed

  • Nicholas was a French magistrate and a famous  hunter of witches

  • He wrote Daemonolatreiae libri tres ("Demonolatry" and eventually replaced the Malleus Maleficarum as the most recognized handbook of witch-hunters in parts of Europe.

  •  Remy believed  Devil could appear before people in the shape of a black cat or man and liked Black Masses. Demons could also have sexual relationships with women and, in case they did not agree, rape them.

  • Between 1591 and 1606, he condemned hundreds of people at the stake for Satanism

 

 

 

 

  • George was a physician and an author of the German Renaissance.

  • He wrote a book on magic, he condemns witchcraft, endorsing the witch-trials of his time: "if the witches are not burned, the number of these furies swells up in such an immense sea that no one could live safe from his or her spells and charms."
