Romanticism was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century, and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850.

1736

27th October

The birth of James Macpherson (D.17th February 1796) was a Scottish writer, poet, literary collector and politician, known as the "translator" of the Ossian cycle of epic poems. He was the first Scottish poet to gain an international reputation.

1741

7th February

The birth of Henry Fuseli (D.17 April 1825) He was a Swiss painter, draughtsman and writer on art who spent much of his life in Britain. Many of his works, such as The Nightmare, deal with supernatural subject-matter.

27th January

The birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (D. 5th December 1791) He was a prolific and influential composers. He composed more than 600 works, many of which are acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the greatest and most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music.

28th November

The birth of William Blake (D.12th August 1827). Who  was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. Blake was placed at number 38 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.

The birth of Robert Burns,(D.21st July 1796) also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns,

the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire and the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets.

He was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement, and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world.

The Birth of Jean Paul(Johann Paul Friedrich Richter) (D.14th November 1825) He was a German Romantic writer, best known for his humorous novels and stories.

9th July

The birth of Ann Radcliffe (D.7th February 1823) was an English author and pioneer of Gothic fiction. She was the most popular writer of her day and almost universally admired; contemporary critics called her the mighty enchantress and the Shakespeare of romance-writers

29th January

The birth of Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (D.9th December 1824). He was a French painter and pupil of Jacques-Louis David, who participated in the early Romantic movement by including elements of eroticism in his paintings. Girodet is remembered for his precise and clear style and for his paintings of members of the Napoleonic family.

The birth James Ward (D. 17th November 1859) He was a British painter, particularly of animals, and an engraver.

7th February

The birth of William Wordsworth (D.23rd April 1850) who was an English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads 

17th December 

The baptism of Ludwig van Beethoven (D.26th March 1827).

He was a German composer and pianist. He was a crucial figure in the transition between the classical and romantic eras in classical music and is considered to be one of the greatest composers of all time.

The birth of  Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (D. 21st September 1832). He  was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, playwright and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley

The birth of Dorothy Mae Ann Wordsworth (D.25th January 1855) was an English author, poet, and diarist. She was the sister of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth, and the two were close all their adult lives.

The birth of  Samuel Taylor Coleridge (D.25th July 1834) He was an English poet, literary critic, philosopher and theologian who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets

12th August

The birth of Robert Southey (D.21st March 1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, one of the Lake Poets. The English word "zombie", from the Haitian French "zombi", is purported to have first been recorded by Southey in his 1819 essay History of Brazil.

 

5th September

The birth of Caspar David Friedrich (D. 7th May 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic

 landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation.He is best known for his mid-period allegorical landscapes which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies.

The birth of Charles Lamb (D. 27th December 1834) was an English

essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764–1847).

23rd April

The birth of J. M. W. Turner (Joseph Mallord William Turner) (D. 19th December 1851) He was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisation, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.

16th December

The birth of Jane Austen (D. 18th July 1817) was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816)

24th January

The birth of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (D.25th June 1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, a jurist, composer, music critic and artist. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is based.

 The birth of John Constable,(D.31st March 1837) He was an English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home – now known as "Constable Country"

The birth of Philipp Otto Runge (D. 2nd December 1810) was a Romantic German painter and draughtsman. Although he made a late start to his career and died young, he is considered among the best German Romantic painters.

The birth of William Hazlitt (D.8th September 1830) He was an English essayist, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator, and philosopher. He is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language.

17th December

The birth of Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet (D.29th May 1829) He was a Cornish chemist and inventor/ In 1799, he experimented with nitrous oxide and was astonished at how it made him laugh, so he nicknamed it "laughing gas" and wrote about its potential anaesthetic properties in relieving pain during surgery.

The birth of Niccolò Paganini (D.27 May 1840) He was an Italian violinist, violist, guitarist, and composer. He was the most celebrated violin virtuoso of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. He was described as a man who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for impossible techniques on the violin.

The birth of Vasily Zhukovsky (D.April 24th, 1852). He was the foremost Russian poet of the 1810s and a leading figure in Russian literature in the first half of the 19th century. He held a high position at the Romanov court as tutor to the Grand Duchess Alexandra Feodorovna .Zhukovsky is credited with introducing the Romantic Movement into Russia.

3rd April

The birth of Washington Irving, (D.28th November 1859) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820)

The birth of Carl Maria von Weber full name, Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber.

(D.5th June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, guitarist and critic, and was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school.

The birth of George Gordon Byron, the 6th Baron Byron (D.19th April 1824) He was an English poet, peer, and politician who became a revolutionary in the Greek War of Independence, and is considered one of the historical leading figures of the Romantic movement of his era.He is regarded as one of the greatest English poets and remains widely read and influential.

French painter and lithographer, whose best-known painting is The Raft of the Medusa

The birth of Gioachino Rossini full name, Gioachino Antonio Rossini. (D.13th November 1868) was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music.​

The birth of Percy Bysshe Shelley (D.8th July 1822) He was one of the major English Romantic poets, who is regarded by some as among the finest lyric and philosophical poets in the English language, and one of the most influential.Shelley own second wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.

The birth of Pyotr Vyazemsky full name Prince Pyotr Andreyevich Vyazemsky (D. 22nd November 1878). A leading personality of the Golden Age of Russian poetry.

The birth of John Clare (D.20th May 1864) was an English poet. He known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption

The birth of Ary Scheffer(D.15th June 1858)He  was a Dutch-French Romantic painter.He was known mostly for his works based on literature, with paintings based on the works of Dante, Goethe.

7th September

The birth of John William Polidori (D.24th August 1821) was an English writer and physician. He is known for his associations with the Romantic movement and credited by some as the creator of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. His most successful work was the short story "The Vampyre" (1819), the first published modern vampire story.

31st October

The Birth of John Keats (D.23rd February 1821) He was an English Romantic poet. The poetry of Keats is characterised by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes.Some of his most acclaimed works were "Ode to a Nightingale", "Sleep and Poetry", and the famous sonnet "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer".

The birth of Thomas Carlyle (D.5th February 1881)was a British historian, satirical writer,

 essayisttranslator,philosopher, mathematician, and teacher.His works included On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History.A great polemicist, Carlyle coined the term "the dismal science"

He was a pioneering Indonesian Romantic painter of Arab-Javanese ethnicity. He was considered to be the first "modern" artist from Indonesia (then Dutch East Indies), and his paintings corresponded with nineteenth-century romanticism

The birth of Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy more known as Felix Mendelssohn

(D.4th November 1847) He was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His best-known works include his overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, his mature Violin Concerto, and his String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his.
