Robert who had also been known as John Stewart was King of Scotland for sixteen years.

He was the Son of Robert II of Scotland, great-grandson of Robert the Bruce

He was known under the name John Stewart, Earl of Carrick before ascending the throne at the age of 53years. And then changed his name to Robert.

David II of Scotland was his great uncle. His grandmother’s(Marjorie Bruce) half-brother. David had no heir so the crown had passed down to his father, Robert II Scotland, David’s Nephew.

Due to an accident with a horse, he grew increasingly despondent and incompetent throughout his reign and was not capable to govern. Because the Robert was not able to rule, Anabella his wife was prompted to take manage state affairs. He told is Queen Anabella that he was ‘the worst of kings and most miserable of men’.

Robert was not a successful king, he played a larger part in the affairs of the kingdom before his accession than as monarch. He seems to have played an important part in the early years of his father's reign, negotiating with John of Gaunt in 1380 and being directed to restore order in the Highlands in 1384.

The news of Robert’s son’s capture, after he was sent away for, his safety was said to have hastened the death of Robert who died shortly after hearing the news.
